Trewin named in Olyroos squad for AFC U23 Asian Cup

Brisbane Roar’s Kai Trewin will represent Australia at the AFC U23 Asian Cup in June after receiving his maiden Olyroos call-up on his 21st birthday.

An ever-present in the Brisbane backline for the past two seasons, Trewin’s selection in the squad continues his progress along the national team pathway following appearances at Under-17 and Under-20 level.

The defender will travel to Uzbekistan alongside former Roar team-mate and BRFC Academy product Jordan Courtney-Perkins, who is now based in Poland.

“We have assembled a strong squad of young Australian talent to compete at the upcoming AFC U23 Asian Cup, with one additional player to be added in the coming days,” coach Trevor Morgan said.

“The players in the squad are making an impact in senior football, and with many age-eligible for Paris 2024 this tournament will provide an important moment in their development.

“While some players won’t be eligible for the next Olympic cycle, the opportunity for them to go to a high-level international competition will assist them in their careers, and help to create further depth for the Socceroos.”

Despite his age, Trewin has already racked up 57 first-team appearances for the Roar across all competitions.

He started 25 of 26 Isuzu UTE A-League games this season and will look to carry that momentum into Group B matches against Kuwait (1 June), Iraq (4 June) and Jordan (7 June), each of which is set to be broadcast live on Paramount+.

The Olyroos will begin assembling in Uzbekistan from Monday, 23 May for a pre-tournament camp.
