The NAB Young Footballer of the Year will be announced at tonight’s Hyundai A-League & Westfield W-League 2014/15 Awards and Brisbane Roar’s Brandon Borrello is one of five players in the running for the prestigious award.
Borrello, who was named the Foxtel National Youth League Player of the Year for the 2013/14 season this time last year, is up against James Jeggo (Adelaide United), Jamie Maclaren (Perth Glory), Terry Antonis (Sydney FC) and Tomi Juric (Western Sydney Wanderers).
After securing the March nomination for the NAB Young Footballer of the Year award, Borrello said he still had plenty to contribute to the club throughout the season.
“It’s a real honour to win the NAB Young Player of the Year nomination for March, it was a breakthrough month for me,” he said at the time.
“My goal now is to keep learning as much as I can, work as hard as I can and continue to build on what was a fantastic month for me.”
The 19-year-old had an outstanding breakthrough 2014/15 campaign, making 22 Hyundai A-League appearances and playing in all six of the Roar’s AFC Champions League group stage matches.
He scored six goals in both competitions, including the winner in Brisbane’s maiden victory in the AFC Champions League – a 1-0 result over Urawa Red Diamonds in Japan.
Roar goalkeeper Jamie Young described the Adelaide-born youngster as “very grounded for his age” after Borrello’s second-minute goal sealed their side’s historic win.
“Brandon doesn’t get carried away, he doesn’t have an ego,” Young said.
“He has a really good work ethic and when you have all of those things you give yourself a chance – that’s showing at the moment.”
Following his nomination in March, NAB donated a $1,500 equipment pack and $1,000 in a NAB Community Saver Account to Borrello’s chosen junior club, Modbury Jets.
The winner of the NAB Young Footballer of the Year 2014/15 Award will be announced tonight at the Carriageworks in Sydney, along with other Hyundai A-League and Westfield W-League awards including the Johnny Warren Medal and Julie Dolan Medal.
The NAB Young Footballer of the Year will receive a $10,000 personal investment portfolio, along with a NAB Private Client Manager to assist with a range of banking and financial services.
