Roar Semi Finals bound after thrilling Wanderers contest

Brisbane Roar are through to the Australia Cup Semi Finals after a spectacular display at jam-packed Perry Park saw them claim a 4-2 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday.

Western Sydney opened the scoring in the 18th minute when Gabriel Cleur delivered a cross to Marcus Antonsson to put the ball away at the bottom left corner.

Brisbane was quick to respond ten minutes later, after a cross from Jack Hingert found Carlo Armiento to tuck the ball into the back of the net to equalise.

Roar took the lead in the 40th minute, with 18-year-old Thomas Waddingham getting a foot to an Armiento corner to score his second senior goal and leave Brisbane ahead at the break.

In the 57th minute, Western Sydney’s Jack Clisby scored a strike from range to level the scoreboard once again.

Moments later, Joe Caletti struck a volley outside the box that took a deflection and found the top of the net, marking his first goal back in orange.

It was none other than Henry Hore to seal the 4-2 victory after driving into the box and scoring in style in a sea of Wanderers defence.

Head Coach Ross Aloisi was delighted with his squad’s performance and looks forward to the Semi Final.

“Very excited for the playing group and the supporters because it was a tough game, a good performance against a very strong side in Western Sydney Wanderers. Always happy when you win, especially at home,” Aloisi said.

Roar will take on Melbourne Knights away in the Semi Final of the Australia Cup. Details TBA on Monday.
