After a stellar Cup run, Brisbane Roar’s Australia Cup journey came to an end with a 3-1 defeat to Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night.
The boy from Cairns, Thomas Waddingham, opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a glorious finish to a Henry Hore cross into the box. That moment made it four senior goals for the 18-year-old.
In the 67th minute, Sydney’s new signing Fabio Gomes converted the penalty after a Henry Hore handball to equalise.
That ignited something in the sky blues, with Robert Mak finding the back of the net five minutes later to put Sydney ahead.
Gomes found a second goal in added time after chasing after a deflection from goalkeeper Macklin Freke and scoring to make it 3-1.
Although Brisbane did not achieve the silverware they were after, heads are held high, and excitement is building for the 2023/24 Isuzu UTE A-League season that kicks off in just under two weeks!
Roar will face Macarthur FC in Round 1 on Saturday 21 October at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.
KO 2:30pm AEST.
