NPL R14 Preview: Young Roar vs Redlands United

Young Roar are up against Redlands United in NPL Queensland Round 14 action at Nudgee Recreation Reserve on Sunday afternoon.

Andre Bennett’s side start the weekend in tenth position and come into Sunday’s match after suffering a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Moreton City Excelsior in their last outing.

A James Durrington free-kick had the Roar in front early on before last year’s Grand Finalists fought back with first half goals from Ben Holliday, Declan Smith and Zac Kierpal to take all three points.

Redlands, who lost 3-0 to Olympic last weekend are currently bottom of the league with three points to their name and go in search of crucial points as they aim to drag themselves out of the relegation zone in the final nine rounds of the 2024 campaign.

The two sides have already met once this season with the pair playing out a 1-1 draw at Compass Grounds in March.

A first half Jack Benham strike had Roar ahead before Max Ellenger rescued a point for the hosts with a header in the sixth minute of second half stoppage time.

In the afternoon’s earlier match Roar’s league leading U23 side will look to return to winning ways after having a nine match winning streak ended with a 4-0 defeat against Moreton City last weekend.

Roar’s U23’s sit two points ahead of Moreton City at the top of table with a game in hand on their nearest rivals.

On Friday it was confirmed that Young Roar trio, Quinn MacNicol, Rhys Williams and Charlie Parkin had been selected in the Joeys squad to compete at the ASEAN U16 Boys’ Championship in Indonesia later this month.

Australia will face Malaysia, Thailand and Timor-Leste in the Group Stage of the tournament which kicks off on Sunday, 23 June.

Sunday’s games at Nudgee Recreation Reserve kick off at 4pm (NPL Men) & 1:45pm (NPL U23) with the NPL Men’s match being live stream on FQTV and the Football Queensland YouTube channel.
