Brisbane Roar are pleased to confirm Liberty A-League Women Head Coach, Alex Smith has extended his contract keeping him at the club for the 2024/25 season.
Smith took charge as the Liberty A-League Women’s Head Coach early in the 2023/24 campaign, having previously coached Melbourne City (as an assistant) and Peninsula Power.
A feature of Smith’s first season was the clear direction and re-introduction of playing Queensland young talent who seemed to thrive under Smith’s leadership, including Sharn Freier, who earned Matildas selection, winning the prestigious Kate McShea Medal, netting three goals and five assists throughout the 2023/24 season.
Alicia Woods, who scored for the Young Matildas against New Zealand at the weekend was another player to earn National team selection after earning her A-League Women’s debut by Smith.
“It’s a new era for the women’s program,” Smith said.
“I am really looking forward to having a full preseason to implement my principles from the beginning. My aim is to create a brand of football that is enjoyable to watch and effective on the ladder. My team will defend aggressively, control possession, and attack with purpose.
“Continuing to develop and produce the next generation of National team players is a clear directive from the club’s management and very important to me. We have made strategic signings to help us accomplish this goal, and I am really looking forward to working with this exciting young squad which I know our supporters will get behind.
“I would like to bring an excitement in the way that we play, which I hope our supporters will enjoy and get behind. I want to make our games in Brisbane a regular outing for all football fans. It’s a very long offseason, and I can’t wait to get started.”
Brisbane Roar COO, Zac Anderson said the club were delighted to have Smith on board for the upcoming campaign.
“We are proud to be offering another up and coming Queensland coach in Alex an opportunity to lead the women’s program in season 24/25,” Anderson said.
“Alex deserves this opportunity to lead a side that he has worked to re-shape, with a heavy focus on bringing through the next generation of Queensland talent.
“We believe at this time stability is important and that Alex has set strong foundations to continue working from. We’re looking forward to seeing our women’s squad take shape over the coming weeks and for the season to commence.”
