NPL R22 Match Wrap: Young Roar 2-0 Sunshine Coast Wanderers

Young Roar closed out the 2024 NPL Queensland season with a 2-0 win against Sunshine Coast Wanderers at Nudgee Recreation Reserve on Friday night.

Goals from Ty Cobb and Rylan Brownlie secured all three points in Roar’s final match of the season.

Darryl Barton forced George Plusnin into a strong save at the near post after unleashing from the edge of the area in the tenth minute.

Four minutes later Cobb fired an effort into the side netting from a tight angle after being played in behind by Lennard Atterwell.

In the 21st minute Noah Mcgrath came close with a strike from distance when he fizzed and effort inches wide of the bottom corner.

Cobb opened the scoring in the 27th minute when he latched onto a bouncing ball and slammed a first time effort into the back of the net via the inside of the post from outside the area.

Moments later Zac Fowler nearly added a second for Roar when he found space inside the area and forced Rileyt Adamson into a diving save with his shot on goal.

In the 32nd minute it was Plusnin who came up big in between the sticks to deny Kirito Higuchi’s lashed effort from the top of the box.

Max Brown was denied an stunning equaliser by the crossbar ten minutes into the second when he rattled the woodwork with a strike on the turn from distance.

Brownlie doubled Roar’s lead in the 81st minute when he got in behind the Wanderers defence and finished one-on-one for what was his eighth goal of the 2024 season.

Brownlie’s strike leaves him level with Ivan Ozzi as Roar’s top goalscorers in the NPL this season.

Friday’s 2-0 win leaves Roar in sixth position after round 22 with their position subject to change dependant on results elsewhere.
