Angie Beard’s return to Brisbane Roar now has another chapter. The defender has been selected in the Ninja A-League Women All Stars squad for August’s clash with Chelsea FC Women at Allianz Stadium.
The fixture is the second in the All Stars’ history, following the 2024 meeting with Arsenal in Melbourne, and pits the pick of the Ninja A-League against a Chelsea side boasting Matildas pair Sam Kerr and Ellie Carpenter. There is a familiar face in the dugout too. All Stars coach Jeff Hopkins was at the helm when Beard played a key role in Melbourne Victory’s 2021 championship.
Beard’s 2025/26 season
Beard rejoined the Roar in February 2026, nearly nine years on from her last appearance for the club where her professional career began. The impact was immediate. She anchored the back line through the run home as the Roar returned to the finals for the first time since 2020/21, defeating Adelaide United in the elimination final before taking Wellington Phoenix to the wire across two semi-final legs.
In between, she pulled on the Philippines shirt at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup here in Australia, facing the CommBank Matildas in the tournament opener in Perth. A former Young Matilda with senior caps for Australia, Beard has become a mainstay of the Philippines team that reached the nation’s first FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023 and has now qualified for the 2027 edition.
