Brisbane Roar duo Nick Fitzgerald and Kofi Danning have been selected in the Qantas Australian Under 23s squad for next week-s AFC Asian qualifier for the 2012 London Olympics Games against Iraq in Gosford.
The squad announcement marks Fitzgerald-s first call up to the national team set up and although the Qantas Olyroos are already out of contention for the event, both players were excited to be involved in the national team set up under Head Coach Aurelio Vidmar.
“It-s still a competitive game so for me, it-s not a dead rubber,” Fitzgerald said.
“There-s a lot of pride at stake and they-ve picked a good young squad so hopefully we can prove that we-re up to it.”
Fitzgerald joins a host of other newcomers to the squad while Danning is one of eight players in the 18 player squad who has seen game time at Australian under 23 level.
Their opponents Iraq are also out of contention to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games but in the other group match, Uzbekistan will need to defeat the United Arab Emirates to guarantee a direct passage to the Olympics.
Kick off on Wednesday, 14 March at Central Coast Stadium in Gosford is at 7.30pm AEDT.
