Four Brisbane Roar stars have been selected by Westfield Matildas Head Coach Alen Stajcic for the upcoming Algarve Cup in Portugal beginning on 1 March 2017.

Captain Clare Polkinghorne, goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold, midfielder Katrina Gorry and forward Emily Gielnik have been named in the 21-player squad, selected following a three-day camp in Canberra.

Polkinghorne, Arnold and Gorry all represented the Westfield Matildas at theĀ Rio Games in August while Gielnik returns to the squad for the first time since the Rio Games qualification tournament earlier in 2016.

ā€œAs Iā€™ve stated before weā€™re heading into a new cycle so there is an increase on the competition for places and weā€™re looking for who can provide that extra depth and quality,ā€ Stajcic said.

ā€œHaving positions covered by more players and building that depth is really what weā€™re looking for.ā€

Katrina Gorry’s (below) next apperance for the national side will be her 50th Westfield Matildas cap while Clare PolkinghorneĀ is closing in on 100 national caps.

ā€œIncreasing the experience and capacity of players who have been in the team for a long time and continuing to improve them both on and off the field is certainly something weā€™ve spoken about this week in terms of improving the quality of the squad from within as the first port of call.ā€

The squad will assemble in Sydneyā€™s west for a training campĀ on MondayĀ prior to departing for PortugalĀ on WednesdayĀ night.

Currently 6thĀ in the FIFA womenā€™s world rankings, the Westfield Matildas have been grouped alongside Sweden (ranked 8th), Netherlands (ranked 12th) and China P.R. (ranked 13th) for the tournament.

ā€œThis tournament is a starting point towards looking ahead to the Asian Cup next year, the World Cup the year after and then the Games in Tokyo in 2020,ā€ said Stajcic.

ā€œWeā€™re really looking to test the players and see who is going to be part of this squad moving forward. The Algarve Cup gives us four matches against high quality opponents and Iā€™m sure the team will learn and grow a lot from competing in this tournament.ā€

The Westfield Matildasā€™ first match of the Algarve Cup is against Sweden on Wednesday 1 March at 6.30pm local time (5.30am AEDT,Ā Thursday 2 March).
