McPherson wants ‘fire in the belly’ to continue burning

Garrath McPherson hopes Friday’s forced postponement will prove a blessing in disguise as his Brisbane Roar players grow increasingly hungry to notch up their next Liberty A-League victory.

The Roar were unable to take the field against Canberra United with a waterlogged pitch at Perry Park leading match officials to put the fixture on hold.

It was a frustrating outcome for all involved, particularly after a week of thorough analysis following the disappointing home defeat to Adelaide United.

McPherson was confident several days of close examination were set to result in a strong showing from a highly determined playing group, who must now channel their intensity into this week’s away game against Melbourne City.

“It might be a positive that that thought, that fire in the belly of the players can burn just a little bit more and help fire Thursday night,” McPherson said.

“We talked about it all week, the uncharacteristic performance. We unpacked absolutely everything that happened prior to that game against Adelaide just to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

“The fans deserve better, the community deserve better. It’s not Brisbane Roar. We’ll have to wait until Thursday in Melbourne [to put it right].”

One clear upside from the delay is the chance for players to recover from any knocks and niggles.

Goalkeeper Mia Bailey was set to miss Friday’s match after a collision against Adelaide left her with a painful leg injury, but McPherson said the youngster could now be a chance to travel to Melbourne.

“She’s been getting more movement back throughout the week,” he said.

“She might be a chance for Thursday night. I’m sure she really wants to get back out there.”

The Roar is working with the A-Leagues to determine a new date for the postponed Canberra clash and will advise members and fans as soon as more information is available.

Those who held tickets for Friday night are encouraged to retain them for the rescheduled fixture.
