Roar Women defeated in Sydney

Sydney FC proved too strong in Sunday’s Westfield W-League match at Seymour Shaw Park, securing three points with a 5-1 win over our Roar Women.

A flurry of goals during the second period for the home side, which included two for Caitlin Foord to round off her hat-trick, proved decisive as Yuki Nagasato’s maiden Westfield W-League goal in the first half wasn’t enough.

“We are disappointed in our performance, but against one of the best attacking units in the league, we have a lot to take from the game and learn,” Andreatta said.

“We will work to improve key aspects of our game in training this week and will need to quickly change our focus and look ahead to our next opportunity against Melbourne Victory.”

The home side opened the scoring through Foord in the 14th minute but the Roar Women were soon level as Japanese international Yuki Nagasato found the back of the net for the first time in Brisbane orange with with classy finish.

Following an open and even opening 45 minutes, the home side took control of the contest as the hour mark passed.

Sky Blues captain Teresa Polias gave her side the lead in the 59th minute, but her side took a stranglehold on the contest as two more goals for Foord and a late strike for substitute Princess Ibini rounded out the scoring.

Mel Andreatta’s Premiership-winning side will return home and prepare for a blockbuster contest against Melbourne Victory at Richlands’ Lions Stadium next Sunday (3pm KO QLD time).

A penetrating ball through the Roar’s defence from Savannah McCaskill finds Caitlin Foord one-on-one with Mackenzie Arnold, who comes out second best as Foord slots the ball into the bottom corner from an acute angle.

Brisbane Roar – Nagasato 25’ – 1-1
A ball from Allira Toby finds the feet of Yuki Nagasato in the heart of the Sydney’s defence. Nagasato shows her experience, rolls through a number of defenders and converts with ease.

Sydney FC – Polias 59’ – 2-1
Sydney captain Teresa Polias hits a vicious first-time strike into the top-left corner of the net, following a cut-back ball from Princess Ibini.

Sydney FC – Foord 67’ – 3-1
Foord times her run to perfection, latching on to a long ball and punishing the Roar defence with a cool finish.
