This weekend the Hyundai A-League will commemorate Remembrance Round, dedicated to remembering and acknowledging those who have served and made the ultimate sacrifice.
The Roar will don a special event black kit to commemorate the event when they face Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium on Saturday.
The new special event jersey, embroidered with a symbolic poppy and accented with orange is significant for the club and the occasion, according to CEO David Pourre.
āWe spent a lot of time this year designing kits for important games and we certainly had that in mind for Remembrance Round,ā Pourre said at today’s media event in Brisbane’s ANZAC Square.
āWe look forward to playing our part and showing our respects on what is one of the most salient days in Australiaās history – I think the poppy in the middle of the jersey does it justice.
āItās an important day for the Club and certainly we will be represented well by the players and we are quite proud to don the black this weekend with the key elements of orange.ā
Karyn Huriwai from RSL Queensland highlighted the importance of the Roarās support of Remembrance Round.
āItās fantastic that the Roar have been able to give that support and get it [Remembrance Day] out there to the general public – it helps everyone stop and remember those who have served.ā
Roar striker Dylan Wenzel-Halls added that remembering through football is a unique opportunity for those involved.
āItās important that we pay our respects to the people who have sacrificed their lives for the country and to do that through football is a fantastic opportunity,ā Wenzel-Halls said.
āI think the occasion will get everyone motivated to get out there and perform well.ā
The young attacker knows that Saturdayās game will be a tight affair but recent results are not a sign of things to come.
āWeāre focused on what weāre doing but theyāre a great side ā theyāve got a young team so Iām sure theyāll be enthusiastic. Wenzel-Halls said.
āDefensively weāre sound and very compact ā once we score goals the floodgates will open.ā
