Brisbane Roar has recorded a third consecutive draw to open its Westfield W-League campaign.
A stunner from Katrina Gorry in the game’s opening stages was ruled out by a similarly spectacular strike from Canberra’s Grace Maher late in the second half as the two sides shared the spoils in blustery conditions at Dolphin Stadium on Thursday night.
The Roar had the run of the mill for most of the contest, creating the better of the chances and hitting the woodwork on numerous occasions.
Isobel Dalton and Emily Gielnik, in her 100th Westfield W-League appearance, came closest for the Roar, both seeing shots strike the framework while Gorry wasn’t too far away from a brace in the game’s dying moments, forcing a strong save out of the Canberra keeper.
Speaking post-match, Head Coach Jake Goodship says his squad simply need to be more clinical in front of goal.
“Disappointing doesn’t describe it. We did enough again, we created chances. We look difficult to beat, which is a positive, but there are players who are getting into positions who need to score goals and need to be better,” Goodship said.
“Last season we conceded a few goals and scored a lot. This year, we’ve done a lot of work in possession, and in our back third, which shows. We’re creating chances which is positive, but now we need to score goals.”
The Roar now have the Round 4 bye before a trip west to face Perth Glory on Sunday, 24 January.
