ALM R12 Match Wrap: Newcastle Jets 3-1 Brisbane Roar

A ten-man Brisbane Roar side were handed a 3-1 defeat by Newcastle Jets in Isuzu UTE A-League Round 12 action at McDonald Jones Stadium on Tuesday night.

Ayom Majok’s first A-League goal wasn’t enough as an Apostolos Stamatelopoulos brace coupled with a goal from Lucas Mauragis secured all three points for the home side.

The Jets were awarded a penalty in the 25th minute after Louis Zabala was adjudged to have handled Rene Piscopo’s miscued effort inside the area but Macklin Freke came up with a huge save to deny the Jets number ten from the spot.

Four minutes later the home side opened the scoring with an Apostolos Stamatelopoulos header at the near post on the end of a Kosta Grozos free-kick.

Things took a turn for the worse for the Roar in first half stoppage time when VAR upgraded a Jay O’Shea yellow card to red following a seemingly innocuous challenge on Callum Timmins.

The Jets took advantage of their numerical advantage in the 54th minute when Daniel Wilmering got in behind the Roar defence before squaring for Stamatelopoulos to finish.

Moments later Lucas Mauragis made it three when he finished one-on-one on the end of a lighting counter attack from the home side.

Substitute, Majok pulled a goal back for Brisbane in the 71st minute when he cut in from the right and slid a finish into the bottom corner for what was his first A-League goal.

One positive on a difficult night in Newcastle was a return from injury for Henry Hore, Scott Neville and Antonee Burke-Gilroy, who all came off the bench in the second half.

Tuesday’s 3-1 defeat leaves Roar in ninth position on the A-League ladder ahead of Saturday’s trip to face Central Coast Mariners at Industree Group Stadium.
