ALM R23 Match Wrap: Western Sydney Wanderers 1-2 Brisbane Roar

Brisbane Roar have taken a big three points on the road with a 2-1 win over Western Sydney Wanderers in Isuzu UTE A-League Round 23 action at CommBank Stadium on Friday night.

Goals from Tom Aldred and Henry Hore secured the points against a Wanderers side who found the back of the net through Dylan Pierias and were denied a share of the spoils by a 91st minute Macklin Freke penalty save.

Aldred opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when he rose highest to meet a Jay O’Shea corner and send a powerful header into the back of the net to open his goalscoring account for the 2023/24 season.

Wanderers levelled the scores in the 64th minute through Pierias, who sent a backheel into the bottom corner after Nicolas Milanovic headed a Jack Clisby corner into his path.

Hore netted what proved to be the matchwinner in the 77th minute when he brought down a Corey Brown corner at the back post, before smashing a finish into the bottom corner for what was his fifth goal of the campaign.

Wanderers were awarded a penalty in second half stoppage time following VAR review for an Aldred handball inside the area but Freke came up big to deny Marcus Antonsson from the penalty spot.

Friday’s win sees Roar, who remain eighth move to within five points of the top six with just three rounds remaining of the regular season.

Roar are back at home next weekend, facing Newcastle Jets in A-League Round 24 action at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday evening. Get your tickets HERE
