ALM R24 Match Wrap: Brisbane Roar 0-2 Newcastle Jets

Brisbane Roar suffered a 2-0 defeat against Newcastle Jets in Isuzu UTE A-League Round 24 action at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday evening.

Second half strikes from Clayton Taylor and Apostolos Stamatelopoulos sealed the points for the visitors as Roar tasted defeat at Suncorp for the first time under Ruben Zadkovich.

Roar came out the blocks strongly, enjoying the lions share of possession and fashioning ten shots to the Jets three in the opening half.

Antonee Burke-Gilroy came the closest for the home side in the opening half, with a goal bound strike from close range that was cleared off the line by Daniel Wilmering.

Two minutes later the Jets defence managed to scramble clear after Florin Berenguer was unable to get a decisive touch on Henry Hore’s strike across the face of goal.

The Jets opened the scoring in the 53rd minute when Taylor twisted and turned on the edge of the area before poking a finish into the bottom corner.

Stamatelopoulos made it two ten minutes later when he ghosted into the area to head a Kosta Grozos free-kick from deep into the bottom corner.

Roar’s best chance of the second stanza fell to substitute, Jonas Markovski who forced Ryan Scott into a flying fingertip save with a diving header at the near post in the 74th minute.

Saturday’s 2-0 defeat leaves Roar in eighth, five points outside of the top six with two rounds remaining in regular season.

Roar’s focus now shifts to next Saturday’s trip to face Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park.
