ALM R28 Match Wrap: Brisbane Roar 1-0 Wellington Phoenix

Brisbane Roar sealed a 1-0 win over Wellington Phoenix in their final home game of the 2024/25 Isuzu UTE A-League season at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

A second half Florin Berenguer strike secured Roar’s second home win in nine days and extended their unbeaten run to three matches.

Sam Klein continued to showcase his attacking prowess and came within inches of a stunning opener when he rattled the woodwork with an effort from range in the tenth minute.

Jay O’Shea came close with a pair of free-kicks, firing wide of the bottom corner in the 19th minute before forcing Josh Oluwayemi into a diving save with another in the 32nd.

Wellington’s main threat came through Kosta Barbourses’ pace in behind with the former Roar forward playing in Hideki Ishegi who poked wide at the near post with a first time effort for what was the visitors best chance of the opening half.

Berenguer scored the game’s decisive goal in the 58th minute when he brought down an Asumah Abubakar flick on before slamming a finish into the bottom corner from the top of the box for what was his second goal in three games.

Saturday’s match marked Matt Acton 50th A-League appearance and the shot stopper produced a pair of big saves to deny Lukas Kelly-Heald and Corbin Piper and secure his clean sheet in quick succession midway through the second half.

Abubakar had the best chance of the closing stages when he cut in from the right and slammed an effort into the side netting as Roar held on for a 1-0 win.

Focus for Roar now turns to their final match of the 2024/25 Isuzu UTE A-League season against Central Coast Mariners at Industree Group Stadium next Friday night.
