ALM R7 Match Wrap: Brisbane Roar 1-4 Melbourne City

Brisbane Roar suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Melbourne City in Isuzu UTE A-League Round 7 action at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.

A Jay O’Shea strike proved to be in vain against a City side who took all three points courtesy of a Yonatan Cohen brace along with goals from Andreas Kuen and Steven Ugarkovic.

Kuen put the visitors ahead in the opening minute when he capitalised on a defensive slip and broke clear of the defence before finishing one-on-one.

Cohen doubled City’s advantage in the 17th minute when he fired home a first-time finish at the near post after being picked out by a Kuen cut-back.

The Israeli winger nearly had a second on the stroke of half time when he rattled the post with a powerful strike from the top of the box.

15 minutes into the second stanza it was Roar who struck the woodwork through an impressive O’Shea free-kick from range.

City found a third in the 70th minute when Cohen picked out top corner on the end of a driving run through the heart of Roar’s defence from Kuen.

Roar pulled one back through an O’Shea penalty in the 75th minute after VAR awarded a penalty for a foul on Jacob Brazete by Nathaniel Atkinson after a mazy run into the area by the teenage winger.

O’Shea confidently dispatched his effort from the penalty spot, sending Patrick Beach the wrong way for what was his second goal of the 2024/25 season.

City found a fourth in the 82nd minute when Ugarkovic found space inside the area and slid a finish into the bottom corner to round out the scoring on a difficult night in Brisbane.

Next up for Roar is a trip to face Western Sydney Wanderers at Commbank Stadium on Saturday, December 14.
