Brisbane beaten by Western Sydney

Brisbane Roar were defeated by Western Sydney Wanderers 3-1 on Sunday night. Dominance up front and capitalisation of goal opportunities from the Wanderers got the better of the Roar in the second half.

Ten minutes into the match, Hollie Palmer put over a great ball to Sharn Freier who struck it just wide of the far post.

Kijah Stephenson put through a ball for Sharn Freier to have another shot at goal in the 21st minute that called for a punching save from Western Sydney goalkeeper Shamiran Khamis.

It was not until the 38th minute that the Wanderers opened the scoring after Sophie Harding crossed the ball in for Bethany Gordon to score her first Liberty A-League goal.

Moments later, Australian Matilda Clare Hunt scored a header off a corner from Amy Harrison to score her first goal in the Liberty A-League competition to enter the break 2-0.

Brisbane came back firing in the second half as Shea Connors drove into the 18-yard box but shot the ball right at the keeper.

Connors used her pace to outrun the Wanderers defence and crossed a ball in for Larissa Crummer to tap it into an open goal to get Brisbane on the board in the 49th minute.

Bethany Gordon found her second for the night as she buried the ball into the bottom right corner in the 79th minute that was out of Hensley Hancuff’s reach to secure the 3-1 victory.

The Roar will face fourth-place Melbourne Victory this Sunday at CB Smith Reserve.
