Brisbane Roar through to Australia Cup Round of 16 with victory against Newcastle

Brisbane Roar are through to the Australia Cup Round of 16 after winning 3-2 against Newcastle Jets at Maitland Sportsground on Monday night.

Newcastle’s Trent Buhagiar opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a shot that sliced through the Roar defence.

Brisbane responded just on the brink of half-time from a Carlo Armiento corner that found its way into goal with a deflection off Jets goalkeeper Ryan Scott.

After the break, Newcastle found the lead when Clayton Taylor scored a volley to make it 2-1.

The 62nd minute saw magic from Louis Zabala, scoring his first ever senior goal and the equaliser after a pass through from Taras Gomulka.

In extra time, Quinn MacNicol was substituted on for Carlo Armiento and came out firing, creating two great chances to put Brisbane in front.

The 15-year-old became the youngest ever player to make a professional debut in Brisbane Roar history.

Alex Parsons sealed the victory with a tap-in to make it 3-2 which sees Brisbane Roar progress into the Round of 16 to face Sydney United 58 FC. All details TBC.
