Brisbane Roar can confirm captain Matt Smith will miss the remainder of the current Hyundai A-League season after having surgery on his hip injury today.
Smith hasn-t played or trained in over four weeks with his hip labrum tear keeping him out of action for the club since the 1-0 loss to Newcastle Jets in mid-January.
After a review with the surgeon on Monday, it was decided late yesterday afternoon that surgery was Smith-s best option.
With an estimated three to four months recovery time, the 30-year-old is no chance to play any more part in Brisbane-s 2012/13 season.
“I am bitterly disappointed to be out for the rest of the season,” Smith said.
“I am still confident the rest of the boys can finish off the season well and I-m now firmly focused on working hard in my recovery.”
The rest of the Roar squad are currently in Thailand preparing for tonight-s AFC Champions League qualifier against Buriram United before returning home to play Wellington Phoenix at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.
