Brisbane Roar have fallen agonisingly short of a first Grand Final in twelve years after falling to a 2-0 defeat to the Wellington Phoenix in their Semi Final second leg.
The Roar rode out an early onslaught from the Phoenix to produce a number of quick fire chances with the best of them falling to Daisy Brown whose effort midway through the first half on the edge of the area was saved well by the Phoenix keeper.
Both sides looked set to go to the half level until a last minute goal on the stroke of half time from Makala Woods put the Phoenix in front and levelled the tie on aggregate.
The second half saw both sides push to find the crucial goal and it was Woods who nearly did just that in the final seconds of the match however Chloe Lincoln stood tall to incredibly deny the striker from closer range at the death.
Going into extra-time, the Roar continued to fight despite losing Bente Jansen, Tameka Woods and Momo Hayashi through injury and looked to have earned a clear spot kick when Daisy Brown was tackled to the floor in the 98th minute however the referee thought otherwise.
No less than two minutes later a long ball from Wellington winger, Brooke Nunn caused a scramble at the back with the ball falling flush on Woods’ foot and past the onrushing Chloe Lincoln.
Despite all the efforts in the second period of extra-time, the Roar were unable to find the leveller, ultimately ending their season.
