Brisbane Roar is pleased to announce the appointment of highly-experienced Ron Smith to the position of assistant coach.

Smith joins the three-time Hyundai A-League Champions following nine years with Football Federation Australia as a performance analyst with both the Socceroos and Olyroos.

He also spent a decade as Head Coach of the Australian Institute of Sport, where he developed some of Australia-s most decorated footballers including Mark Viduka, Lucas Neill, Frank Farina and Craig Moore.

“Ron brings a wealth of knowledge to the coaching staff which the players and the club will benefit greatly from,” Head Coach Mike Mulvey said.

“We-re very lucky to have secured Ron-s services as someone with his experience in the game is always very sought after.”

With stints in Malaysia – including winning the championship with Sabah FA in 1996 – Smith is also very familiar with Asian football and was equally excited to be joining the Roar ahead of a campaign that includes the AFC Champions League and FFA Cup.

Alongside his work with FFA, Smith also worked on other projects including developing a coaching app called Football Practices and a coaching website, thefootballcentre.com.au as well as working on his research PhD on goal-scoring patterns.

“When the offer came to join Brisbane Roar, the timing was very good,” Smith said.

“I have spent the last few years committed to various projects and I-m now looking forward to focusing on this new challenge and working with coaching staff and players ahead of a big season.”

Smith-s role is effective immediately with the Brisbane Roar squad returning to training today following their off-season break.
