Freke: Roar Raring to go ahead of Wanderers test

Brisbane Roar goalkeeper, Macklin Freke says his side are ready to give it everything in Friday’s Isuzu UTE A-League Round 23 clash against Western Sydney Wanderers at CommBank Stadium.

Roar start the weekend in eighth position on 26 points, eight shy of the sixth placed Wanderers and knowing nothing short of three points will keep their finals hopes alive.

Big game, obviously coming off two defeats now, we’ve got four games left and to be in with any mathematical chance of making finals we need to win all four so that’s what we’ll be going down there for, three points and a good performance,” Freke said.

“I think in a way the pressure is almost off us so we can really go on and focus on putting on a good performance and really locking in and getting the three points.

“They’ve had a good upturn in form recently, I think they’ve won their last two and every time you play them you know it’s going to be a fight.

“It’s going to be a battle and I think we’re expecting more of the same on Friday so we need to show up and compete and really give it a good crack.”

The 2023/24 season has seen Freke, who came through the club’s NPL program establish himself as the Roar’s number one goalkeeper.

The 25-year-old has appeared in all but one of the Roar’s A-League matches this season, keeping two clean sheets and making 86 saves – the fifth most of any goalkeeper in the league for the campaign so far.

“I guess that’s always the goal, just to play games and play consistently and I’ve been lucky enough to be the number one this season for the majority,” Freke said.

“Matty Acton is a top pro and he pushes me every day so I take nothing for granted but it’s been good to get a nice run of games under my belt and I’m feeling confident.”

Friday’s match at CommBank Stadium kicks off at 6:45pm and will be broadcast live on Paramount+.
