Isuzu UTE A-League preview: Brisbane Roar v Sydney FC

Warren Moon says the competitive ambition to beat Sydney FC and give Brisbane Roar fans a reason to cheer remains well and truly alive going into tonight’s Isuzu UTE A-League finale.

The Roar are out of top six contention but must remain focused with a crucial Australia Cup playoff game still to come on Friday night.

Though staying prepared for that sudden death date remains top of mind, Moon insists there is no extra incentive needed to produce a performance against the Sky Blues.

“I think it’s still a big game,” the Brisbane boss said.

“Rivalries exist regardless of league position. We want to beat Sydney. There’s a rivalry for a good reason – it’s Queensland and New South Wales.

“We’re going into the game desperate to win for our fans in our last home game.”

Brisbane finished fourth under Moon last season but will have to watch the Finals Series from afar this time around following a disappointing run of results after back-to-back wins in March.

As he charts an off-season period which includes July friendlies against Aston Villa and Leeds United, the Head Coach has identified certain areas in the squad for renovation over the coming weeks and months.

“We know where our deficiencies are and where we need to strengthen and improve for next season,” he said.

“It’s quite clear for everyone to see. We’re going to work really hard to try and do that.

“We know the right recruitment, a few more players, can really turn this team around and make us a Finals team next season.”

As for the likely make-up of his side to face Sydney on Tuesday, Moon indicated that some key figures will be kept fresh for the upcoming Cup clash.

“We’ll make changes, we have to make changes,” he said. “We’ve got a short turnaround before an important Australia Cup qualifier.

“The ones we want to play in that we might rest or give limited minutes to knowing that’s going to be a key game now.”
