Isuzu UTE A-League report: Adelaide prevail after twin penalties

An injury-hit Brisbane Roar were pegged back by two opposition penalties as Adelaide United claimed a 3-1 win in the Isuzu UTE A-League on Sunday.

Nikola Mileusnić notched his second goal in three games to open the scoring for Brisbane inside two minutes but, with fresher legs, the Reds finished the stronger of the two sides at Moreton Daily Stadium.

Craig Goodwin equalised before half-time when a VAR review for handball led to Adelaide’s first spot-kick.

The second penalty, awarded just after the restart, enabled Stefan Mauk to get on the scoresheet and left a Roar side missing five attacking options with too much to do, as Goodwin iced the game late on.

The silver linings come in the shape of another home game against Western Sydney Wanderers this Sunday, along with the emergence of teenage midfielder Sam Klein for his professional debut off the bench.

Brisbane Roar | Nikola Mileusnić (2′)

1-0 – Jay O’Shea’s flick-on breaks to Mileusnic on the edge of the area and the winger wastes no time in slotting past goalkeeper Joe Gauci.

Adelaide United | Craig Goodwin (24′)

1-1 – A contest close to the Roar box sees the ball squirt out into Scott Neville’s arm. The referee gives a free-kick, before changing his decision to a penalty after VAR intervention. Goodwin subsequently converts.

Adelaide United | Stefan Mauk (48′)

1-2 – Mauk converts Adelaide’s second penalty following a trip on Ryan Kitto.

Adelaide United | Craig Goodwin (85′)

1-3 – Brisbane are exposed at the back after sending numbers forward. Goodwin is found on the break, cuts inside and finishes into the bottom far corner with his right foot.
