Isuzu UTE A-League report: Clinical Phoenix claim three points

Brisbane Roar were made to rue wastefulness in front of goal as an Oliver Sail-inspired Wellington Phoenix claimed a 3-0 win at Moreton Daily Stadium on Wednesday.

Sail made 11 saves – a number of them outstanding – as the failed to find a way past the Wellington keeper despite racking up 36 shots in total.

The visitors managed six on target but were clear winners on the scoreboard, with Ben Waine and Ben Old on target after a first-half own goal.

That opener came in contentious fashion as a suspected push from Waine on defender Scott Neville went unpunished amid a crowded penalty box and a lengthy VAR review.

Brisbane will look to bounce back at home to Newcastle Jets this Sunday.

KO at Moreton Daily Stadium is at 4:05pm. CLICK HERE for tickets.

GOALS

Wellington Phoenix | Scott Neville OG (28′)

Wellington’s inswinging corner hits a couple of bodies before dropping over the line via Neville’s attempt at a clearing header. The defender was nudged by Waine as he leapt but the goal is allowed to stand after a four-minute VAR review.

Wellington Phoenix | Ben Waine (48′)

Wellington launch a counter-attack through Gael Sandoval, who finds Old inside. Anton Mlinaric stops the midfielder’s progress but the ball breaks to Waine, who sweeps a first-time finish into the bottom far corner.

Western United | Ben Old (57′)

David Ball wins a long ball forward in a challenge with Kai Trewin. Old picks it up, drives into the box and fires home inside the near post.
