Isuzu UTE A-League report: Lescano goal not enough with Roar edged out in Newcastle

Juan Lescano’s first Isuzu UTE A-League was not enough to help a luckless Brisbane Roar evade a 2-1 defeat away to Newcastle Jets on Thursday.

In driving rain at McDonald Jones Stadium, the hosts had a slice of fortune for their opener as a Savvas Siatravanis shot hit the post and bounced back in off an outstretched Macklin Freke.

Jay O’Shea struck the woodwork from the penalty spot before the break but Lescano, a half-time substitute, gave the Roar some reward for effort with a deflected equaliser just past the hour.

However, Newcastle hit back quickly through Angus Thurgate to snatch all three points in tough conditions.

GOALS

Newcastle Jets | Macklin Freke OG (22′)

1-0 – Siatravanis’s low shot hits the base of the post before striking Freke’s outstretched arm, diverting it back into the net.

Brisbane Roar | Juan Lescano (64′)

1-1 – Corey Brown and Nikola Mileusnic combine well and work the ball to Lescano, who gets a left-foot shot away which deflects in off Jordan Elsey.

Newcastle Jets | Angus Thurgate (70′)

2-1 – Given too much time outside the box, Thurgate arrows a show into the bottom left corner.
