Isuzu UTE A-League report: Roar on the board after Adelaide stalemate

Juan Lescano

An improved defensive display and the chance to undertake proper matchday preparation helped Brisbane Roar record their first point of the Isuzu UTE A-League season in a 0-0 draw with Adelaide United on Saturday.

After back-to-back away games complicated by same-day travel, the Roar returned home for a Round 3 clash with the Reds at Moreton Daily Stadium and secured a confidence-boosting clean sheet.

The lively Luke Ivanovic had the best chance for Brisbane but was denied a second goal in three games by James Delianov’s double save in the 53rd minute.

The forward’s enterprising first league start in orange otherwise proved a positive takeaway, as did Jez Lofthouse’s debut from the bench and a strong showing at the back led by Scott Neville, Kai Trewin and Anton Mlinaric.

Rahmat Akbari also threatened going forward, while for the visitors Stefan Mauk hit the post and Kusini Yengi had a shot blocked on the line by Josh Brindell-South.

On a warm afternoon, tempers briefly frayed late on when Adelaide defender Javi Lopez was sent off following a poor challenge on Juan Lescano, but there was ultimately no breakthrough.
