Isuzu UTE A-League report: Wellington prevail over Roar in Sydney

Brisbane Roar’s momentum was halted by a 3-0 defeat to a clinical Wellington Phoenix at Leichhardt Oval in Sydney on Wednesday.

Henry Hore twice went close to scoring either side of Scott Wootton’s headed opener in the 33rd minute, which gave Wellington a match-winning platform.

The outcome might well have been different had Hore not been denied by an Oliver Sail wonder save when the game remained goalless.

The in-form attacker went close again in the 61st minute with a rasping left-footed shot that came back off the post.

Phoenix went straight up the other end and rubbed salt into the wound through Gael Sandoval’s stunning strike, before Reno Piscopo completed the scoring from a counter-attack with just over 20 minutes to go.

GOALS

Wellington Phoenix | Scott Wootton (33′)

The English defender is too big and strong at the far post as he heads in an inswinging corner.

Wellington Phoenix | Gael Sandoval (63′)

Seconds after Hore hits the post, Wellington mount an attack and score through Sandoval, who curls a fine strike inside the far post from 20 yards.

Wellington Phoenix | Reno Piscopo (67′)

Jaushua Sotirio gets in behind the defence and pulls the back to Piscopo for a close-range finish.
