Liberty A-League report: Roar left to rue late City escape

Brisbane Roar suffered late heartbreak in the Liberty A-League on Saturday as Melbourne City came from behind to snatch a smash-and-grab 2-1 win at Moreton Daily Stadium.

Katrina Gorry marked her 100th appearance in orange with the opener from the penalty spot in the 71st minute but it wasn’t enough for a Roar side that repeatedly threatened Melissa Barbieri’s goal.

Rhianna Pollicina equalised for City with a superb free-kick, before Hannah Wilkinson headed home a 94th-minute set-piece to snatch all three points.

Brisbane will have to quickly overcome the disappointment, with a trip to Sydney FC coming up on Wednesday night.

GOALS

Brisbane Roar | Katrina Gorry (71′)

1-0 – Meaghan McElligott is bundled to the ground as she attempts to attack an incoming cross. The referee points to the spot, and Gorry converts with aplomb as she fires past Barbieri.

1-1 – From about 25 yards out, Pollicina hits a curling free-kick over the wall and into the top left corner.

Melbourne City | Hannah Wilkinson (90’+4)

1-2 – Wilkinson rises to meet Pollicina’s free-kick, directing a perfect header back across goal and into the net.
