Lucas Herrington named in Young Socceroos squad for ASEAN U-19 Boys’ Championship

Brisbane Roar defender, Lucas Herrington has been named in a 23-player Young Socceroos squad to contest the 2024 ASEAN U-19 Boys’ Championship held in Surakarta, Indonesia from 17-29 July.

16-year-old, Herrington who’s been training with the Roar’s A-League side in pre-season ahead of the 2024/25 campaign earns selection after playing a key role in the heart of defence for Young Roar throughout the 2024 NPL season.

The tournament – formerly known as the AFF Championship – features 12 Members from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Football Federation.

Australia has been drawn in Group B for the tournament, alongside Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam and will play all their Group Stage fixtures out of Gelora 10 November Stadium.

The 2024 edition of the Championship – which is also contested at U-16 level – will be Australia’s ninth appearance, having previously won the tournament on five occasions (2006, 2008, 2010, 2016, 2019).

Morgan will a take vastly different squad to Indonesia than the one that toured South America in June, putting in strong performances against both Chile and Uruguay. The tournament’s timing has created an opportunity to broaden depth across the age group, prior to Morgan selecting his squad for AFC U-20 Asian Cup China PR 2025TM Qualifiers in September.

The Young Socceroos will arrive in Indonesia in the wake of the Subway Joeys being crowned 2024 ASEAN U-16 Boys’ Champions, courtesy of a thrilling penalty shootout victory over Thailand in the Final.
