NPL R11 Match Wrap: Sunshine Coast Wanderers 3-0 Young Roar

Young Roar have suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Sunshine Coast Wanderers in NPL Queensland Round 11 action at Ballinger Park on Sunday afternoon.

Goals from Max Brown, Darryl Barton and Dyce Robertson secured the points for the hosts in a result that ended a four-match unbeaten run for a Roar side who finished with ten men following an Ayom Majok red card.

The first big chance of the afternoon fell to Ivan Ozzi, who fired an effort inches wide of the bottom corner from a tight angle after being picked out by an intricate James Murphy through ball in the ninth minute.

Two minutes later Brown came close for the hosts when he dragged a shot wide from the edge of the area after making a mazy run through the heart of the Roar defence.

Majok gave the Wanderers defence a scare in the 31st minute, when he got a toe in almost dispossess goalkeeper, Eligh Williams but the keeper quickly reacted to dive onto the loose ball.

Wanderers took the lead in the 41st minute when a Liam Fitzsimmons cross found Brown unmarked inside the area allowing the midfielder to send a powerful header into the back of the net.

Barton doubled the hosts advantage when he fired an effort into the bottom corner after Roar failed to clear from a Fitzsimmons corner.

Roar were reduced to ten-men three minutes into second half when Majok was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Fitzsimmons.

Cobb had a big opportunity to halve the deficit in the 57th minute but fired wide from close range at the near post after Ryan Lethlean found the forward with a cutback.

Five minutes later it was Lethlean, who couldn’t direct his effort on target after a Taras Gomulka free kick found the defender unmarked inside the area.

Substitute, Rylan Bronwlie then forced Williams into a fingertip save when he got in behind the Wanderers defence and rifled a strike towards the bottom corner from a tight angle in the 66th minute.

Robertson made it three in the 72nd minute when he turned home a first-time finish on the end of a Brown corner.

Sunday’s 3-0 defeat leaves Andre Bennett’s side in seventh position on the league table at the halfway point of the 2024 NPL Queensland season with 13 points to their name.

Roar’s U23 side continued their strong run of form with a commanding 6-2 win over the Wanderers in Sunday’s second match at Ballinger Park.

Zac Fowler, who now has 16 goals in competitive action this season bagged a hat-trick, while Kade McDougall chipped in a brace and Forbes Porter was also on target in the sides seventh win from eight games so far for the campaign.

Next up for Young Roar is a clash against Brisbane City in Round 12 action at Nudgee Recreation Reserve on Sunday, May 26.
