NPL R14 Match Wrap: Young Roar 2-4 Redlands United

Young Roar suffered a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Redlands United in NPL Queensland Round 14 action at Nudgee Recreation Reserve on Sunday afternoon.

Despite goals from Ivan Ozzi and James Durrington it was the visitors who came away with the points thanks a Peter Klaassen brace along with strikes from Max Ellenger and James Piercy.

Klaassen put Redlands ahead in the 14th minute when he reacted quickest to finish after having his initial effort saved by Lachlan Duke who made his return from injury in Sunday’s match.

Ozzi levelled the scores on the stroke of half time when he got in behind the Redlands defence and poked home a finish from a tight angle for what was his sixth goal of the 2024 NPL Queensland season.

Redlands regained the lead four minutes after the restart when Ellenger rose highest to head home from a corner for the visitors.

Five minutes later Durrington levelled the scores with a panenka from the penalty spot after Ozzi was fouled inside the area by Joshua Tuffino.

Jack Benham then had a big opportunity to put Roar ahead when he broke free of the Redlands defence before firing his effort against the woodwork in the 58th minute.

Piercy again put the visitors in front in the 79th minute when he pounced on a loose ball to poke home a finish from close range after Lucas Herrington got a toe to Ryo Emoto’s initial cross.

Klassen rounded out the scoring with a goal from the penalty spot in the 86th minute after Herrington brought down Emoto inside the area.

Sunday’s defeat leaves Young Roar in tenth position on the NPL Queensland ladder after 14 rounds of action.

In the afternoon’s earlier kick off at Nudgee Recreation Reserve Roar’s league leading U23 side defeated Redlands 6-0.

Tuquiri Beckett and Eremugo Debele both scored braces while Declan Warnes and Tinotenda Madau were both also on target in Sunday’s win.

Focus for Young Roar now shifts to next Sunday’s Round 15 match up with Lions at Nudgee Recreation Reserve.
