NPL R16 Match Wrap: Wynnum Wolves 2-3 Young Roar

Young Roar returned to the winners circle with a 3-2 victory against Wynnum Wolves in NPL Queensland Round 16 action at Carmichael Park on Saturday evening.

Goals from Kade McDougall, James Durrington and Ivan Ozzi sealed all three points against a Wolves side who found the back of the net through Luke Francis and Naoki Maeda.

Francis opened the scoring in the 16th minute when he bundled home Kyren Walters back heeled assist after Lachlan Duke parried Jakob Mudnic’s effort from range.

McDougall levelled the scores in the 52nd minute when he rifled an strike into the back of the net after making a mazy run into the penalty area.

Roar’s parity was short lived however, with a Maeda strike from distance creeping into the bottom corner just a minute later.

Just two minutes after that it was Roar’s turn to respond quickly with Durrington winning and dispatching a penalty for what was his third goal in his last three games.

Durrington came close to adding to the scoring in the 82nd minute when he rattled the woodwork with a free-kick from deep.

Ozzi headed home the match winner in the 86th minute when he pounced to finish after Tom Lynch got a hand to Lucas Herrington’s initial header on the end of a Roar corner.

Saturday’s 3-2 victory sees Roar climb to ninth on the NPL Queensland ladder with just six rounds remaining in the 2024 regular season.

Roar’s U23 side prevailed 2-1 thanks to goals from Jac Parrot and Dominic Amaya in Saturday’s earlier kick off at Carmichael Park.

Next up for Young Roar is a clash against league leaders, Gold Coast Knights at Nudgee Recreation Reserve on Saturday, July 6.
