NPL R18 Match Wrap: Peninsula Power 4-0 Young Roar

Brisbane Roar suffered a 4-0 defeat against Peninsula Power in NPL Queensland Round 18 action at AJ Kelly Park on Sunday afternoon.

Goals from Connor McKenzie, Jheison Macuace along with a Marcus Beattie brace saw the hosts claim all three points.

Mckenzie put the home side ahead in the 11th minute when he rose highest at the near post to head home from a Rhys Gray free-kick.

Macuace doubled the home sides advantage in the 36th minute when he forced a turnover deep in Roar’s half before firing an effort into the back of the net via the inside of the post from the edge of the area.

Roar’s best chances of the first half fell to Kade McDougall and Ty Cobb who forced Power keeper Jordan Thurtell into a pair of strong saves following some incisive runs into the area.

Power came out of the blocks firing in the second stanza and were rewarded with pair of Marcus Beattie goals within the opening 15 minutes of the half.

Sunday’s match saw Jamie Waddington play his first NPL Men’s minutes in the heart of defence alongside Andrew McLeod.

Christian Mladenis, who joined the club from Gold Coast United and Lennard Atterwell, who was part of the Papua New Guinea squad that competed at the OFC Nations Cup came off the bench to play their first minutes at Roar.

Sunday’s 4-0 defeat leaves Roar in tenth position on the NPL ladder with five rounds remaining in the 2024 regular season.

Roar’s U23 side kept pace with Moreton City at the top of the table with a 2-1 win over Power in the afternoon’s earlier kick off thanks to goals from Caleb Butler and Zac Fowler.

Next up for Young Roar is a match up with Rochedale Rovers at Nudgee Recreation Reserve in NPL Round 19 action on Saturday, July 20.
