NPL R18 Preview: Peninsula Power vs Young Roar

Brisbane Roar’s NPL Queensland sides are back in action when they make the trip to AJ Kelly Park to face Peninsula Power in Round 18 action on Sunday afternoon.

After a few week’s hiatus Roar look to build on a 3-2 victory over Wynnum in their last outing, where second half strikes from Kade McDougall, James Durrington and Ivan Ozzi saw them take all three points at Carmichael Park.

Roar’s fourth win of the campaign leaves Andre Bennett’s side in tenth position on the league table with six matches left to play in the 2024 season.

Peninsula Power, who are coached by Aaron Philp occupy fourth position on the league table with 29 points to their name after 16 matches.

The two-time NPL Premiers, who defeated Olympic 3-0 last weekend are home to several former Young Roar players including: Kane Gibbs, Josip Milicevic, Lachlan Hunter and Rhys Gray.

Roar and Power have already met once this season with the sides playing out a 1-1 draw at Nudgee Recreation Reserve after trading blows via first half penalties finished off by Rylan Brownlie and Brenton Fox.

In Sunday’s earlier kick off Roar’s U23 side look to pick up their second win in a week after defeating Rochedale 8-6 in a remarkable match at Underwood Park midweek.

Forbes Porter, Caleb Butler, Zac Fowler, and Christian Mladenis all netted doubles in Wednesday’s win for Sekou Jomanday’s side, who sit level with Moreton City at the top of the league table with a game in hand on their rivals from Wolter Park.

Joeys trio, Quinn MacNicol, Rhys Williams and Charlie Parkin are all back in the country after winning the ASEAN U16 Championship in Indonesia.

All three players gained valuable minutes in Australia’s title winning campaign with MacNicol finishing as the tournament’s Golden Boot winner with six goals including one in the final against Thailand with the Joeys eventually won on penalties.

MacNicol is one of a number of players to have played a part in Roar’s NPL program this season that has been involved in the early stages of A-League Men’s pre-season.

Sunday’s action at AJ Kelly Park takes place at 4pm (NPL Men) and 1:45pm (NPL U23) with the NPL Men’s match being live streamed on the Football Queensland YouTube channel and FQTV.
