NPL R2 Match Wrap: Lions 3-0 Young Roar

Young Roar suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of defending Champions, Lions FC in NPL Queensland Round 2 action at Luxury Paints Stadium on Friday night.

Goals Shaun Carlos, Luke Broderick and Andy Pengelly saw the home side take all three points

Friday’s match saw Roar welcome back Joeys trio, Quinn MacNicol, Charlie Parkin and Rhys Williams from international duty where they were crowned champions of the Hattrick U17 International tournament while Ivan Ozzi returned from injury to make his first start of the new campaign against his former club.

The home side opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Carlos slammed a finish into the bottom corner from the top of the box after being played in by Broderick.

MacNicol came close to levelling the scores in the twelfth minute when he pounced on a loose ball inside the area and skipped past his marking before driving his effort inches wide at the near post.

Alex Fiechtner sent a header over the bar from close after being picked out by a James Enticknap in the 27th minute before Christian Naveen forced Cardiff Pond into a diving save with a strike from the top of the box a minute later.

The roles were reversed for Lions second as Carlos assisted Broderick with a ball in behind before the forward found the bottom corner with his finish to double the hosts lead minutes before half time.

Roar’s best opportunity of the second stanza fell to Forbes Porter in the 84th minute when the winger rose highest to meet a Rhys Williams cross but couldn’t keep his close range header down.

Roar were reduced to ten men in the dying stages of the contest when Jackson O’Reilly received his second yellow card for a foul on Pengelly.

Moments later Pengelly ghosted in at the near post to turn home a Fiechtner cross with a first time finish and round out the 3-0 scoreline.

Next up for Karl Dodd’s side is a trip to face Sunshine Coast Wanderers at Ballinger Park on Friday, March 7.
