NPL R3 Match Wrap: Redlands United 1-1 Young Roar

Young Roar are off the mark for the 2024 NPL Queensland season after playing out a 1-1 draw with Redlands United at Compass Grounds on Saturday evening.

A first half Jack Benham strike had Roar in front before Redlands stole a share of the spoils courtesy of a stoppage time Max Ellenger header.

Benham netted his first goal in a Roar shirt to open the scoring in the 29th minute when he turned home a first-time finish at the back to finish off a Ty Cobb cross on the end of a well worked team move down the left.

For the second time in three rounds of the new campaign Redlands found an equaliser in second half stoppage time when Ellenger found the back of the net with a looping header at the near post in the 95th minute.

Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Compass Ground leaves Young Roar in tenth position on the NPL Queensland ladder after three rounds of action.

Roar’s U23 side made it two wins from three to start the new season with a commanding 5-1 victory thanks to goals from Eremugo Debele, Zac Fowler, Caleb Butler, Kobi Griffiths and Kade McDougall in the afternoon’s earlier match at Redlands.

Next up for Young Roar is a trip to face Lions FC and Luxury Paints Stadium in Round 4 action next Sunday afternoon.
