NPL R6 Preview: Young Roar vs Gold Coast United

Young Roar go in search of a third straight NPL Queensland victory when they face Gold Coast United in Round 6 action at Nudgee Recreation Reserve on Tuesday night.

Back-to-back win over Wynnum Wolves and St George Willawong have seen Karl Dodd’s side move to within four points of the competition’s top four in recent weeks.

A Rhys Williams double in his first game back since returning from Joeys duty at the AFC U17 Asian Cup sealed a 2-0 victory over Wynnum before an Ivan Ozzi brace along with a David Russell goal saw Roar defeat St George in 3-0 in their most recent outing.

Ozzi’s two goals off the bench earned him a spot in the NPL Queensland Team of the Week alongside goalkeeper, Sam Flannery who’s kept clean sheets in consecutive games.

Yet another washout saw the weekend’s trip to face Sunshine Coast Wanderers at Ballinger Park postponed.

United, who are coached by Craig Midgley currently occupy fourth position on the NPL Queensland ladder with three wins from six games to their name this season.

A 90th minute goal from former Young Roar forward, Christian Mladenis saw United snatch a 1-1 draw against Brisbane City on Friday night.

Mladenis is one of several players in the United squad to have previously represented Roar at youth level including Zahi Addis and Nicholas Panetta.

Tuesday’s match at Nudgee Recreation Reserve kicks off at 7:30pm and will be live streamed on FQTV and the Football Queensland YouTube channel.
