NPL R8 Match Wrap: Wynnum Wolves 1-2 Young Roar

Young Roar picked up their first win of the 2025 NPL Queensland season with a 2-1 victory over Wynnum Wolves at Carmichael Park on Sunday afternoon.

A first half double from Rhys Williams in his first league match since returning from Joeys duty at the U17 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia sealed all three points for Karl Dodd’s side.

Williams opened the scoring in the sixth minute when he reacted quickest to poke home a finish after Jack Child’s header came back off the crossbar on the end of a Noah Maieroni corner.

The forward completed his brace and doubled Roar’s lead in the shadows of half time with a first time finish at the back post after being picked out by David Russell, who combined with Maieroni to break through the home sides defence.

Luke Francis scored what proved to be a consolation goal for Wolves in the 94th minute when he brought down a Jean Jabo cross and bundled home a finish on the turn to halve the deficit.

Sunday’s victory leaves Roar in tenth position on the NPL Queensland standings having played four games so far.

Next up for Karl Dodd’s side is a trip to face newly promoted, St George Willawong for the first time in NPL action at St Georges Park on Sunday afternoon.
