NPL R9 Match Wrap: Young Roar 3-2 Olympic FC

Young Roar ran out 3-2 winners over Olympic in NPL Queensland Round 9 action at Nudgee Recreation Reserve on Sunday evening.

Strikes from Ayom Majok & Quinn MacNicol coupled with an own goal secured the points for Roar against an Olympic side who found the back of the net through Cyrus Dehmie and Lathan Dunn.

Majok opened the scoring in the fifth minute when he slid home a finish at the back post on the end of a James Murphy cross.

George Plusnin made a smart save to deny Linden Farr at the near post before Nathan Beagley came close with a header for the visitors moments later.

Dehmie levelled the scores on the stroke of half time when he powered in a finish on the turn in off the post from a tight angle.

Ryan Lethlean came close to grabbing his first goal for the club when he got in behind the Olympic defence and was denied one-on-one by Matt Lugo in the opening minutes of the second half.

MacNicol, who returned to action for the first time since representing the Joeys in Italy earlier this month and was on the bench for the A-League side on Friday put Roar ahead in the 49th minute when he rifled an effort into the bottom corner from the top of the box.

Olympic again drew level in the 75th minute through substitute, Dunn who lasered home a strike from the edge of the area.

Five minutes later Roar regained the lead when Olympic defender turned a Ty Cobb cross into his own net for what proved the be the matchwinner following an impressive run by the winger down the left.

Sunday’s victory sees Roar climb to seventh on the league table and within four points of the top four after nine rounds of action.

Next up Young Roar look to take a big step towards the Kappa Pro Series Quarter Finals when they make the trip to face Sunshine Coast Wanderers at Ballinger Park in their final group game on Wednesday night.
