NPL R9 Preview: St George Willawong vs Young Roar

Young Roar look to make it back-to-back wins when they travel to face St George Willawong at St Georges Park in NPL Queensland Round 9 action on Sunday evening.

Karl Dodd’s side will be full of confidence after picking up their first win of the 2025 NPL Queensland campaign with a 2-1 victory over Wynnum Wolves at Carmichael Park on Sunday afternoon.

A first half double from Rhys Williams in his first league match since returning from Joeys duty at the U17 AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia sealed all three points for Roar.

“Rhys has been the one in the group that has come the furthest in his development since we started pre-season in November,” Roar’s academy head coach Karl Dodd told aleagues.com.au.

“He has a real tenacity about him to continually be better and get it right. His attitude and application is first class and it’s showing in his performances.”

Sunday’s victory leaves Roar in tenth position on the NPL Queensland ladder, having played four games so far.

Newly promoted St George Willawong, who are coached by Danny Gnjidic currently sit bottom of the league with two points to their name after five rounds of action.

The 2024 FQPL 1 Premiers come into Sunday’s match after suffering a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Gold Coast Knights in the Queensland Cup on Wednesday night.

Sunday’s match which will be the first meeting between Roar and St George at NPL level kicks off at 5pm at St Georges Park and will be live streamed on FQTV and the Football Queensland YouTube channel.
