Brisbane Roar attacker Tommy Oar has been named in a preliminary squad for the Caltex Socceroos’ upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Thailand
Oar is one of five Hyundai A-League players to make the 30-man squad for Australia’s last World Cup Qualifier for 2016 in Bangkok on Tuesday, 15 November.
The 24-year-old has amassed 28 caps for Australia, scoring two goals including one in the current qualification campaign against Kyrgyzstan in 2015.
Oar has made an impressive start to the Hyundai A-League campaign, featuring in all three of the Roar’s opening matches, and currently ranks inside the side’s top three for crosses, chances created and shots.
The 24-year-old just yesterday spoke of his ambitions to once again play for Australia, an opportunity he believes will come from optimising his game at the Roar.
“If you ask any player in Australia they will all say they want to be in the national team and i’m no different,” he said.
“In order for me to achieve that I have to focus on my performances for Brisbane Roar.
“If I can perform well for Brisbane then the rest will take of itself so i’m completely focused on football at Brisbane.
Caltex Socceroos Head Coach Ange Postecoglou named an extended squad to allow players a final chance to impress in their respective matches this weekend.
The squad will be cut to 23 following this weekend’s fixtures.
“We have decided to name an extended squad for this game so I can have another look at the matches being played all over the world this weekend,” Postecoglou said.
“We have players who are in the squad or on the fringe, including those playing in the Hyundai A-League, that are just starting their seasons and with the tight turnaround from Japan to Thailand I wanted to have another look at them after they have showed good signs in the opening rounds.
“It is yet another good sign of the depth we are creating and when we announce the team after this weekend there will be players who miss out that are playing well enough to be part of the squad.”
Postecoglou says the clash against Thailand is a crucial clash in the context of Australia’s qualification group in which the Socceroos currently sit second behind Saudi Arabia
“We are currently sitting second in what is a very tight group and after this game we will be at the halfway stage of qualification so this game is important.”
