The Queensland Government has announced today it will sponsor the inaugural Brisbane Roar Harmony Day Community Shield at Underwood Park, Rochedale this weekend.
The seven-a-side football tournament will celebrate the diverse cultures within Australia.
As men’s and women’s football teams from across South-east Queensland prepare take to the field this weekend for the event, the Queensland Government will join Logan City Council and multi-cultural organisation MDA as sponsors of the tournament.
The financial support from the three organisations means participation is now FREE for the 24 teams that have entered.
The generous backing also covers costs for the inaugural tournament.
Harmony Day celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. Football brings everyone together.
Queensland Treasurer and Minister for Sport Curtis Pitt said this event captured the spirit of what sport is meant to be all about.
“I’m thrilled to be getting on board with this initiative which has such broad community involvement and gets some of the best young players in Queensland involved at a grassroots level,” Mr Pitt said.
“To me sport is about team work, participation and a sense of social inclusion, which is exactly what this competition’s all about.
“This is an invaluable initiative for the Logan community to encourage respect and understanding.”
Team allocation is now full with an exciting festival of football planned at Underwood Park, the home field of Rochedale Rovers FC, Underwood Road, Rochedale, on Saturday and Sunday, February 27-28.
The program starts at 10am each day with the final series on Sunday.
The Pauls Roar Rapid Fire inflatable fields will also be at the ground for friends and family of participants who want to enjoy some football fun.
The winners of the event will receive the Ultimate Brisbane Roar Experience which includes a behind-the-scenes tour of Suncorp Stadium prior to the club’s Hyundai A-League Harmony Round match against Sydney FC on Saturday, March 26 (6.30pm kick off).
The winning team will enjoy the match from VIP seats and will be presented with the Harmony Day Community Shield at half time.
