Rankin earns second Commonwealth Bank Matildas call-up

Brisbane Roar defender Jamilla Rankin continues to make strides on the international stage after being named in the Commonwealth Bank Matildas squad for the second time.

Tony Gustavsson’s team are set to return home for the first time in almost 600 days for two matches against Brazil in Sydney on 23 and 26 October.

Rankin, who earned her maiden call-up in September, has retained her place in a strong 23-player squad.

The left-back will have the chance to push for a debut at CommBank Stadium against the world number seven side.

Gustavsson said the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 was a key factor in his selection process.

“It’s not just about who is the best, it is about who can become the best, so we are looking at ’23 in all the decisions that we are making right now,” the Head Coach said.

“We are going to keep looking for new players, and either invite them to the training environment to see them there, or for some players that make a good impression in the training environment, also make sure that they get some game time.”

Rankin, 18, is getting set for another full season with Brisbane after appearing in every match last term.

The Roar’s A-League Women’s campaign begins away to Perth Glory on Saturday, 4 December, with the teams to then meet back in Queensland on Friday, 10 December
