Roar Academy Graduate Lucas Herrington Named in Socceroos World Cup Squad

Brisbane Roar is proud to congratulate former defender and academy graduate Lucas Herrington on his selection in the CommBank Socceroos’ 26-player squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

At just 18, the Brisbane-born central defender becomes one of the youngest members of Tony Popovic’s squad, capping a rise that began in the Roar’s youth ranks. Herrington joined the club’s academy in 2019 as a 13-year-old after junior football with Taringa Rovers, Toowong FC and Brisbane City, and spent five years developing through the NPL set-up before earning a three-year scholarship deal in September 2024.

He made his A-League Men debut that December in a 2-2 draw with Western Sydney Wanderers, then announced himself with a maiden senior goal in a 4-3 win over Sydney FC in January 2025. Seventeen appearances and a string of commanding displays in his first top-flight season saw him crowned Roar Young Player of the Year, win the AFC U20 Asian Cup with the Young Socceroos, and feature at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile.

His form at the beginning of the 2025/26 season saw him earn a move to Major League Soccer side Colorado Rapids in January 2026, where he has started almost every match and lined up against the likes of Lionel Messi, Son Heung-min and Thomas MĂĽller, along with making his senior Socceroos debut against Cameroon in late March. That run has now carried him to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Australia have been drawn in Group D and open their campaign against Türkiye at BC Place in Vancouver on Saturday 14 June (2:00pm AEST), before facing co-hosts the United States at Lumen Field in Seattle on Saturday 20 June (5:00am AEST) and Paraguay at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on Friday 26 June (12:00pm AEST).

Brisbane Roar wishes Lucas and the CommBank Socceroos every success at the FIFA World Cup 2026 and look forward to cheering them on.
