Brisbane Roar forward Roy O’Donovan says he is delighted to have opened his account for his new club with a brace in Saturday afternoon’s 4-0 pre-season victory over Brisbane City.
A pair of goals from O’Donovan as well as strikes from Aaron Amadi-Holloway and Rahmat Akbari saw Roar run out victors in front of a 1,560-strong crowd at Logan Metro Sports Park.
Amadi-Holloway bagged his second goal in as many outings when he put the Roar in front with a back post header in the 12th minute.
O’Donovan opened his goal scoring account for the Roar with a quick-fire double on the stroke of half time to send the side into the break with a three-goal lead.
Rahmat Akbari rounded out the scoring in the 68th minute when he broke clear of the City defence before coolly finishing past the onrushing keeper.
Speaking post-match, O’Donovan said he felt his side were progressing nicely following another positive performance in Saturday’s clash.
“We’re a new team, eleven new players, things aren’t going to happen overnight but I thought it was a step up from last week the way we played and I’m excited about next week now,” O’Donovan said.
“We’re getting our combinations going, it’s definitely a step up the ladder and a step in the right direction, there are things we can still work on from today and things we’ve learned from today but overall it’s positive,” O’Donovan said.
The Irishman added he was delighted to get off the mark for his new Club.
“It’s great to score goals whatever the game is as a striker, any striker will tell you that it only matters how many goals you score so I’m happy with today in that regard,” O’Donovan continued.
“But there’s more work to come, we’re obviously building towards Sydney FC in the cup and the [Hyundai] A-League’s starting early October.”
The Roar next hit the road for a week-long pre-season camp in Gladstone, highlighted by a fixture against a Gladstone Select outfit on Saturday, 27 July at Marley Brown Oval.
