Brisbane Roar-s 2013 pre-season campaign began with a loss after Brisbane Premier League leaders Lions FC defeated the Hyundai A-League side 1-0 at Lions Stadium last night.

The Roar were missing six key players – Jade North and Ivan Franjic were away on national team duty while Besart Berisha, Thomas Broich, Liam Miller and Michael Theo were in camp with the Foxtel A-League All Stars squad – and a 61st minute goal to Lions- Sam Campbell proved the difference.

Football fans in Brisbane-s west came out in their droves and were treated to an entertaining, open encounter where both sides looked equally likely to break the deadlock in the first half.

The match capped club captain Matt Smith-s return to football after hip surgery in February while newest squad members Diogo Ferreira and Dimitri Petratos made solid starts to their Brisbane Roar careers.

After heaping the pressure on the Roar after the half-time break, Lions found the back of the net on the hour mark after a goalmouth scramble, despite the best efforts of goalkeeper Matt Acton who pulled off
some impressive saves throughout the night.

Brisbane Roar-s next pre-season fixture is next Tuesday, 23 July against Albany Creek Excelsior. Kick off at Wolter Park is at 7pm.
